Telephones at the Cheider School, the only Orthodox Jewish school in the Netherlands, remained unanswered on Friday morning as the school had shut down for precautionary reasons following the anti-terrorism raid in Vervuers, Belgium, that had left two suspects death. Other terror-related arrests also took place in Berlin and Paris.
“There is no concrete threat to our school following the unsafe situation in Belgium,” board members of the Cheider Haredi school in Amsterdam wrote to parents on Thursday adding that “because of the uncertain situation that it creates, we found it would be irresponsible to open the school.”
Cheider School is following similar initiatives by schools in Antwerp and Brussels.
Dutch Jewish areas in the Netherlands have been under extra security since June on the advice of the country’s anti-terrorist office with places such as Amsterdam’s Anne Frank House and the Jewish Historical Museum having beefed up their scrutiny of visitors.
