Mitsotakis: Trump agrees with the Greek proposal for a US-EU agreement on tariffs

"Europe needs to step up its efforts to remove barriers in our single market", Prime Minister says in his Sunday weekly review

Newsroom April 13 10:55

With wishes for Palm Sunday and a reference to Seferis, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis began today’s noticeably shorter weekly briefing, noting that despite the more concise tone, the government’s work continues with undiminished intensity.

On the international economic front, he referred to the disruption caused by the U.S. decision to impose tariffs, emphasizing Greece‘s firm stance in favor of a unified European response and a calm, measured approach. He spoke of the need for a zero-tariff agreement between the EU and the U.S.—a proposal that, as he said, received a positive response from President Trump.

Domestically, the focus was on the successful launch of this year’s tax declaration process, with a notable increase in submissions and pre-filled forms. The Prime Minister attributed the progress to the reform enacted during the tenure of Minister Hatzidakis, which introduced a fixed timeline and a tax discount for timely payments.

He also presented the new digital platform myOEY.live.gov.gr, which supports exporters and investors in cooperation with the Economic and Commercial Affairs Offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as a legislative measure that suspends criminal prosecution for over-indebted borrowers who are consistent in their payments.

Regarding the upcoming increase in ferry ticket prices due to new European regulations, the government is reducing port fees by 50% for one year, funded by the Green Fund.

The Prime Minister concluded with a reference to the “My Home II” program and the migrant return policy, stressing that the government remains committed to tax fairness, support for the vulnerable, and a consistent migration policy.
