An employee of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) discovered, on the morning of Monday, May 26, three bags in the basement of a building of the School of Engineering, containing a total of 49 intact Molotov cocktails.
Police officers who responded to the incident found that some of the devices included improvised pyrotechnic constructions and butane canisters. A search of the area followed, during which materials used for assembling improvised incendiary–explosive devices were found carefully hidden in a specially arranged space.
A total of the following items were confiscated:
- 49 intact improvised incendiary–explosive devices (Molotov cocktails)
- 2 empty jerrycans with a strong smell of flammable material
- 1 jerrycan containing flammable liquid
- 1 disposable medical mask
- 3 pairs of gloves (some for work, others disposable)
- 5 sponges
- 3 empty glass bottles
- 4 plastic bottles labeled “Gasoline”
- A large number of fabric pieces (rags)
The case is being investigated by the Subdirectorate for Combating Racist and Extremist Violence of the Thessaloniki Criminal Investigation Department.
