Ergin Ataman speaks with Dainikas: “My grandfather was born in Thessaloniki”

The head coach of Panathinaikos, one of Europe's top coaches over the past five years, opens his heart in an in-depth interview. Behind his successful image are stories, roots, and philosophies that extend beyond the court

Newsroom May 27 10:26

Origins and the Language of the Heart

Starting with a simple question about his name, Ataman reveals: “My name is Ergin, not Khalil. Khalil is my grandfather’s name, who was born in Thessaloniki. People always told me I have Greek roots.” The discussion then shifts to his identity: “I am Turkish and proud of it. I love the Greeks, and I feel like I’m at home here in Greece.”

Basketball, Childhood, and Family

He recalls how his journey in the sport began: “I started playing basketball in high school, for one of the most famous clubs in Istanbul, Eczacıbaşı. I began coaching at the age of 20, working with youth teams and academies. Over seven or eight years, I worked across all age categories—boys, juniors, youth—and every year, I won national titles. That’s how my coaching career took off.” His family history includes unexpected twists and turns: “When my father’s business in Italy went bankrupt, we returned to Turkey with nothing. My grandfather, Semih Ergin, a famous politician and former Minister of Defense, was a huge help to us. During our first years back, we stayed at his house for two years. He had finished his political career and was a lawyer. He taught me many lessons about life and the political landscape in Turkey.”

Differences and Similarities with Greece

Known for his open and friendly nature, Ataman comments: “Turks and Greeks are very warm and emotional. That’s why I always feel at home in Greece. Italians, on the other hand, tend to be a bit more aristocratic and reserved.”

Successes, Philosophy, and Enjoyment

“You can’t always win,” he states plainly. “What matters most is enjoying the game and life itself.” His philosophy is rooted in pleasure and confidence: “I live each moment fully. I tell my players in every game: ‘Enjoy the moment because the atmosphere is fantastic’.”

Leadership and Approach to the Game

As the team’s leader, he emphasizes authority and respect: “My players must know I am the captain. I respect them, and I expect respect in return. Honesty is key. They must understand that the team always comes first.” He also stresses trust and freedom: “I don’t control their personal lives, as long as they’re in good shape and enjoying the sport. I believe in giving them space and confidence.”

Political and Social Sensibilities

“I am a person of sports and peace,” he affirms. “I sympathize with Erdogan; I know him personally, and I respect him. Turkey and Greece share many similarities, and peace should always be the goal.” Regarding Greece, he notes: “Greeks love their music, and many come to Turkey. Our differences are small, but our friendship is large.”

Future Aspirations and Ambitions

“I don’t worry about the future,” he concludes. “I focus on living the present and appreciating what I have. The best coaches can be fired, but my self-confidence remains my greatest strength.” His final message: “My dream is for my family to be healthy and happy. That’s what truly makes me successful.”
