Emmanuel Macron discusses viral incident: “My wife slapped me, we were joking”

Brigitte Macron has starred in a series of conspiracy theories in recent years, going so far as to take legal action against false rumors that she is transgender

Newsroom May 27 10:34

The widely circulated footage showing French President Emmanuel Macron being slapped by his wife, Brigitte Macron, during their arrival in Vietnam on the presidential aircraft has sparked a wave of speculation and conspiracy theories worldwide. The clip captures Brigitte Macron forcefully touching her husband’s face, leading to widespread commentary.

In response, President Macron downplayed the incident, suggesting it was a private joke: “We were joking around, teasing each other—like we often do. The video that circulated has become a global sensation, but it was just a moment of lightheartedness.” The Élysée Palace issued a statement, describing the event as a playful exchange between the couple, dismissing any controversy.

A Moment of Controversy or Playfulness?

The footage, shared widely on social media, shows Brigitte Macron reaching out and lightly slapping her husband’s face as he stands beside her. The scene quickly went viral, with some interpreting it as a serious slap, while others dismissed it as affectionate teasing.

President Macron added, “In today’s world, we don’t have much time to dwell on such matters. We’re often caught up in trivial controversies that distract us from more important issues.” He also firmly denied any family quarrel, emphasizing, “All of this is somewhat exaggerated. People say many foolish things. Everyone needs to relax.”

A More Cautious Approach to Misinformation

In recent weeks, the Élysée Palace has adopted a more proactive stance against misinformation, especially concerning Brigitte Macron. The first lady has been the target of numerous conspiracy theories, including false claims that she is transgender. One persistent rumor alleges she was born as Jean-Michel Trogneux and underwent gender transition at age 30, supposedly fabricated by her brother to create her identity.

These unfounded claims have gained traction on social media, fueled by accounts opposing Macron, far-right groups, anti-vaccine activists, and supporters of the QAnon conspiracy theory. According to reports, the origins of these falsehoods trace back to articles published by far-right outlets, which were then amplified via popular YouTube channels known for anti-establishment content.

In one notable case, a photograph purportedly showing Jean-Michel Trogneux as a child was circulated, claiming similarities with Brigitte. However, as both are siblings, such similarities are natural. The French courts have taken action, awarding €8,000 in damages to Brigitte Macron and €5,000 to her brother for defamation and conspiracy theories.

Support from Global Figures and the US Alt-Right

Remarkably, conspiracy theories about Brigitte Macron have also gained traction among American far-right figures, such as Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson, supporters of former US President Donald Trump. Owens, for instance, posted a video titled “Is the First Lady of France a Man?” which further fueled rumors.

Similar disinformation has targeted President Macron himself. In December 2021, a conspiracy theory circulated claiming that Macron’s identity was fabricated, alleging that his wife had birthed his children, a falsehood that gained some attention in fringe circles.

Throughout 2021, far-right French publications dedicated multiple issues to “uncovering” supposed mysteries surrounding Brigitte Macron, with sensational headlines and speculative articles. The conspiracy theories have persisted, with one recent edition titled “Understanding the Jean-Michel Trogneux Case,” continuing the baseless narrative.
