European Parliament President Martin Schulz warned Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday against straying from the common European Union’s stance against Russia, with regard to the crisis in Ukraine.
Just a few hours before arriving in Athens to meet with the leftist Prime Minister, Schulz told German ZDF broadcaster that he has noticed “with great concern” that Greece has abandoned the European Union’s joint position towards Russia.
“You cannot, on the one hand, ask Europe to show solidarity with your own country like Mr. Tsipras does and then, as a first official act, split the common European position,” Martin Schulz underlined.
It should be noted that Schulz, a member of Germany’s co-governing Social Democratic Party (SPD), is scheduled to meet today with Alexis Tsipras in Athens, to discuss the program of the new government and Greece’s plans with regard to the solution of its debt problems.
“During out meeting, I will tell Mr. Tsipras that any unilateral approaches in foreign policy issues won’t help his government,” stressed Schultz.
