The president of the Democratic Left Fotis Kouvelis resigned yesterday at noon, surprising the party’s members who did not have the chance to meet him after the elections.
The pressure he received by party members Grigoris Psarianos and Andreas Papadopoulos, was unbearable.
Fotis Kouvelis submitted his resignation in which he stated: “I tried at every circumstance to promote and defend the democratic values that are our party’s core and express our collective decisions. We all believe in a left- wing policy, which is at the service of social solidarity, dignity and partisan fairness. The results of the elections for the EU Parliament are forcing me to submit my resignation to the Central Committee and to the party’s Convention, in accordance with our prescribed statutory procedures. These institutions will make the necessary decisions,”.
The party is facing a critical crossroad: will it move ideologically to SYRIZA’s dominant opposition party, or will it cooperate with the political forces that the PASOK-based “Elia” party have formed? Many members of the party believe that the internal disagreements will now be highlighted on that which concerns the political party’s direction.
The so called “presidential team” consisted of Dimitris Chatzisokratis, Sakis Papathanasiou and Theodoros Margaritis, who had previously expressed reservations about the cooperation between DIMAR and “Venizelos’ PASOK”. However, a different opinion is expressed by Spyros Lykoudis, Grigoris Psarianos and Andreas Papadopoulos, who insist on cooperating with the “58” Movement and then with the “Elia” party.
