Tatar’s rant: Cyprus is like Israel and Turkish Cypriots are like Palestinians

The Turkish Cypriot leader also added that the arrogant mindset has brought the world to the brink of WWIII

Newsroom June 23 06:05

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar spoke of “arrogant behaviors that have brought the world to the brink of WWIII,” as well as of “southern Cyprus” which, he claimed, is no different from Israel.

In a social media post, Tatar stated that the strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran’s nuclear facilities once again clearly demonstrated how unjust the world we live in is.

He added that the arrogant notion of “it can be mine, but not yours” and “it is my right, but not yours” has brought the world to the edge of WWIII. “Our expectation is that diplomacy be implemented as soon as possible,” he said.

“We must not forget that we live in a world where might makes right, and no country—Western or Muslim—is above condemnation,” he noted. “We see this in the most painful way in the lives of Palestinians in Gaza,” he continued.

As the Turkish Cypriot “people,” in his words, they know very well that “our southern neighbor is no different from Israel. We are facing a ruthless mentality that sees us as a minority on this island, does not accept us as equals, and tries to destroy us in our own homeland at the first opportunity, just like the Palestinians in Gaza,” he claimed.

“However, we, as the Turkish Cypriot people, are not doomed to live by scenarios written by others. We will continue on our path with our own will, unity, and determination. True peace and security will only be possible when we protect our own will and our rights. We will shape our future with our own hands and our collective will, not with the plans of others,” Mr. Tatar emphasized.

Meanwhile, both the Turkish Cypriot leader and the so-called “prime minister” of the breakaway state, Ünal Üstel, thanked Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in written statements for his remarks in support of the breakaway state at the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul.

They highlighted that the Turkish minister’s clear reference to the “inhumane isolation” of the Turkish Cypriots over the decades, as well as his call to the entire Islamic world “to establish direct contact with the Turkish Cypriots,” are extremely important to them.
