Greek FinMin Yanis Varoufakis doesn’t appear adverse to pulling a few “publicity aces” from his colorful shirt sleeves now and then, especially if he’s looking right at television cameras beaming his memorable features around the world. While in Berlin on Thursday, and with none other than Wolfgang Schauble at his side during a press briefing, Yanis used the “N” word, thus turning heads, raising eyebrows and a causing a collective gasp across much of the continent.
The flamboyant “nemesis of European austerity” wasn’t being discourteous to his official German hosts, however, he was referring to the Golden Dawn party in Greece, now the No. 3 party in Parliament, who Varoufakis said were not mere “neo-Nazis”, but just plain Nazis! That said, he called on Germany to assist Greece so that pre-WWII extreme political phenomena don’t spring up in 21st Greece or elsewhere in Euroland.
As usual, some on the “Twittersphere” found Varoufakis’ comment on the sensitive topic (if you’re in Berlin, especially) as audacious, while others praised his bravado.
