In the old days, hitchhiking was almost a ritual. It was the simplest, cheapest and – for many young people – most spontaneous form of travel, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. With a backpack on one’s shoulder, a thumb outstretched and plenty of optimism, one could cross cities, counties or even countries.
The young women called the emergency number 112 in fear, reporting that “the driver wouldn’t let them get off,” while driving at a dizzying speed and making dangerous maneuvers inside the city of Chania. Meanwhile, police forces quickly mobilized, with DIAS teams and patrol cars trying to find him, but the young man kept driving recklessly.
Two of the students managed to jump out of the vehicle when it briefly stopped at a traffic light, but the third stayed inside. The driver reportedly even tried to ram police motorcycles before eventually crashing into a patrol car.

What shows how dangerous his behavior was is that shortly before the incident, he posted a video on social media where he is seen driving fast and showily, doing risky moves and burnouts, recording his actions as if they were an achievement. He has also posted photos of guns and pistols on his social media account.
According to the same information, the young man also called his father to the scene, who, when he arrived, also got into a collision with a patrol car. Both men were arrested and now face very serious charges, including attempted multiple homicide.
It’s worth noting that, according to police sources, the young man had no prior record with the authorities.
