Syrian hacker attack against Turkish govt agencies

The accounts were hacked two years ago in retaliation for Turkey’s downing of a Syrian helicopter

Newsroom February 16 12:56

Hackers from the so-called Syrian Electronic Army (SEA), a group suspected to be linked with the Assad regime in Syria, claim that they have broke into e-mails of Turkish government agencies, about two years ago.

According to the Hürriyet newspaper, the Syrian hackers recently released 967 email accounts in 14 categories on the Internet, bringing to light the scores of correspondence made between March 2009 and November 2012.

The group had targeted accounts of Turkish ministers, diplomats and civil servants, as well as accounts from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the Arab League.

The e-mails that were released reportedly include a 2012 letter, in which US President Barack Obama asked then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to calm Muslims who were offended by a video portraying the Prophet Muhammad and to prevent them from being a threat to American diplomats.

It should be noted that the accounts were hacked two years ago in retaliation for Turkey’s downing of a Syrian helicopter, but the hackers “chose to hold on to these emails to ensure the Turkish government doesn’t attempt to whitewash the involvement they have had inside Syria immediately,” as a SEA spokesperson told daily Hürriyet.
