The Prime Minister Antonis Samaras being under pressure by the president of PASOK Mr. Evangelos Venizelos keeps open the issue of reshuffle giving the impression that the government reshuffle will be completed in a few days. In the meantime he has opened the debate on the increase of the parliamentary majority and forming of “presidential majority”.
The reshuffle is the focal point of the developments. The Prime Minister can prove that he actually received the message of the elections, to mark the changes in economic policy, to remove individuals who have become unpopular or did not perform well and integrate members of Democratic Left party and independent MPs in the government and the parliamentary majority.
The big question is what Mr Samaras will do with the Finance Minister. Until now all options are open. Mr. Yannis Stournaras might be appointed to the Bank of Greece or Greek EU commissioner later on, or he will remain Minister of Finance and proceed to the negotiations on the debt and be appointed Greek Commissioner in October.
The day after elections, Mr. Samaras announced a series of tax relief. However, the interview of Mr Schauble published today puts on hold the economic policy changes planned by the government. Mr Schaeuble says that Greeks should continue reforms if they want to stay in the eurozone and in fact he overturns the government’s plans insisting that the financing needs are not guaranteed and Greece may need a new aid package.
If this is the context in which Greek government will move, then the change of the Minister of Finance is of little importance, while there is also the argument that it might be better to have Mr. Stournaras in the Finance Ministry.
