There is no wonder why the UKIP sponsor of Greek origin and close friend of Nigel Farage Demetri Marchessini has succeeded in turning – almost – all British media against him: misogynist , nationalist and against of anything that seems a little bit progressive, is not afraid to express his extreme views.
He has a website where images of symbols he worships dominate – Acropolis and Churchill-, but he also sends letters, almost every week to newspapers and magazines accusing of everything. In reply to Libby Purves of “Sunday Times”, one of the most famous journalists who fights for the rights of minorities, he writes an article- letter attacking her because she dared to criticize the Russians and accuse them of homophobia.
Of course, it does not matter that Farage’s party supported the fascist BNP which includes skinhead and neo-Nazis. In a country where Nazism is a paramount sin since no fascist has ever set foot in, this causes great surprise and concerns. So, in order the media and official status to displace such an extreme formation such as BNP, they chose to let Nigel Farage evolve, the less harmless and “graphic” person of the far-right wing. And he took advantage of it creating carefully a more human profile. He, therefore, won the confidence of the politically homeless citizens who were against the euro, the fanatic Christians and Protestants, the extreme nationalists and the insane conspiracy theorists.
British media argue that Marchessini is one of the main sponsors of the UKIP party and although the party’s representatives initially refused it, at the end they had to admit it saying that they receive the money he wants to offer them.
Marchessini does not have even the slightest sense of political correctness: besides gay, he is against of women and says that “they need a smack” because they do not get unmarried. For him sex or living together before marriage is considered a crime: “The main problem is that women today are prone to promiscuity”. He also argues that women wearing trousers is also a criminal offence! He even wrote a book entitled «Women in Trousers: a rear View» and its cover illustrates the Caryatids dressed in clothes which, as he points out, are “made only for men”. “The more women dress like men, they less seem attractive to men,” the Greek sponsor of Farage said.
If there is something that Marchessini has managed to stimulate, that is the nerves of many journalists who highlight the risk of his public interventions or who like to discover another “graphic” supporter of Farage. However, the Guardian and Observer newspapers published articles against him. But, it seems that Mr Marchessini is not influenced by that and continues to argue that “people are bothered when someone says the truth in public”.
