A breathtaking yet dangerous natural phenomenon was recorded a few days ago in São Paulo, Brazil, when a fire tornado tore through a sugarcane field, leaving behind widespread destruction.
According to the BBC, the incident was captured on video by São Paulo’s Civil Defense and quickly went viral. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
Fire crews rushed to contain the blaze and managed to prevent the fiery vortex from spreading further across the farmland.
What is a fire tornado?
This rare but striking occurrence happens when extreme heat from a fire rapidly warms the air near the ground. The hot air rises quickly and, combined with local winds, begins to spin — creating a whirling column of flames.
Although fire tornadoes are usually short-lived, they can cause severe damage due to their intensity and the powerful winds that spread fire across large areas.
