Panathinaikos’ US players try Greek cuisine – The dish that scored a perfect 10

From spinach pie to syrupy sweets, Panathinaikos’ new stars get their first taste of Greece

Newsroom September 29 01:02

Greek cuisine has a special way of charming every visitor, turning a simple meal into an unforgettable experience. That’s exactly what happened with Panathinaikos’ two new basketball players, Richaun Holmes and T.J. Shorts, who stepped away from training for a while to dive into the world of Greek flavors.

The tasting journey began with spanakopita (spinach pie). Holmes was instantly impressed, giving it a solid “9” and admitting it could easily become his favorite snack. Then came the traditional Greek salad, where Shorts was a bit more reserved — perhaps because feta cheese and olive oil take some time to win over taste buds not raised on Mediterranean flavors.

But the true highlight was the galaktoboureko. This syrupy dessert, with its golden, crunchy phyllo and creamy custard filling, won them both over instantly. Neither hesitated to give it a perfect 10/10. Shorts even joked that someone needed to take it away from him before he ate the whole tray, while Holmes literally danced with joy as he savored his last bite.

This little culinary adventure reminds us of the magic of Greek cuisine: it doesn’t need elaborate introductions, because its authenticity and simplicity speak for themselves. From a humble pie to a syrup-soaked dessert, Greek flavors have the power to make even professional athletes forget the court for a moment — and surrender to pure enjoyment.
