Trump and Putin agreed to meet in Budapest – “We can bring an end to the war in Ukraine” (updated)

The U.S. president described it as a “very productive conversation,” during which his Russian counterpart thanked him for the Middle East agreement – it was their eighth phone call since the beginning of the year

The two-hour phone conversation between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on Thursday has concluded.

The U.S. president and his Russian counterpart discussed the war in Ukraine and agreed to meet in Budapest.

Trump described it as a “very productive conversation,” during which Putin thanked him for the Middle East agreement.

The war in Ukraine was a major focus for both leaders, who agreed to meet in Hungary at a date yet to be determined. They also discussed post-war matters, including trade between the two countries once the “ill-fated war” between Russia and Ukraine ends.

Next week, U.S. and Russian delegations will meet, with Secretaries of State Marco Rubio and Sergey Lavrov, marking their second meeting since Doha. At this meeting, in a location yet to be decided, the agenda for the second Trump-Putin meeting within a few months will be set.

Donald Trump stated in a post on Thursday afternoon that a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently underway.

The communication between the two leaders comes one day before Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. The talks between Trump and Zelensky are expected to focus on the potential delivery of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.

Last week, Trump said he had informed Zelensky of the possibility of presenting the Russian president with a new ultimatum: either Moscow proceeds with substantive peace negotiations, or Kyiv will receive the Tomahawk missiles.
