New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras focused his address to the party’s political committee on Sunday by criticizing the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA), while he rejected growing calls for a party congress and a change in leadership — i.e. his withdrawing from ND’s helm.

Top ND Deputy Dora Bakoyannis, however, questioned this decision.

“Samaras is afraid of a congress so that the matter of leadership won’t come up,” Bakoyannis said. “Why is he afraid of that? He will either emerge stronger or a new president will be found.”

Sources said her address was interrupted, often rudely, six times by Samaras supporters.

Bakoyannis’ reaction to Samaras’ earlier statements was also interesting. When Samaras said, “The matter is over!” regarding a change in leadership, the camera zoomed in on Bakoyannis, sitting in the audience, and caught her mouthing the words “Not yet.”
