On the occasion of his centennial, the Ministry of Culture has declared 2026 as a commemorative year in honor of Manos Hadjidakis. This is a humble tribute to the eminent composer who, in the post-war era, boldly fused classical music with Greek tradition, bringing folk music to the forefront.

The Ministry’s decision represents a just acknowledgment of Hadjidakis’ extensive body of work. As a dedicated and socially conscious artist, he served Greece and its culture with devotion and sensitivity. Through his free-spirited teaching, sincere guidance, and selfless political interventions, he opposed crude populism with deep education, faith in freedom, and commitment to human ideals. Even three decades after his passing, his work continues to inspire contemporary music production, maintaining a unique resonance.

Lina Mendoni, Minister of Culture, referring to the declaration of 2026 as the commemorative year for Manos Hadjidakis, stated:
“Manos Hadjidakis, both as a creator and an intellectual, managed to impose his own rules in his musical production, as well as in promoting his liberal ideas through writings and public interventions, often consciously diverging from the prevailing trends of his time. By implementing his original ideas through multifaceted and multi-level actions, he overcame the ideological constraints of his era, often transcending the rules which he ultimately influenced profoundly. He represented Greek culture internationally with distinction, seeking—and succeeding—to expand, enrich, and fundamentally reinterpret it, liberating it from old-fashioned ethnography. He emerged as a universal intellectual, selectively intervening with pioneering ideas in the public sphere while maintaining a critical distance from state authority.”

For 2026, the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with its supervised organizations, intends to develop a robust program of activities aimed at reviving Hadjidakis’ work and reassessing his cultural contribution. The goal is for Manos Hadjidakis and his influential creative journey to be reintroduced to younger generations who did not have the fortune to experience his path firsthand, allowing them to witness the profound impact of his interventions on Art and the directions of contemporary Hellenism.
