October 28th: What applies regarding the Public Holiday – What employees and employers need to know

What applies for October 28th and employee pay – How much is the bonus and which businesses it concerns

Newsroom October 24 01:00

October 28th is a mandatory public holiday for employees in the private sector.
This means that those who work on that day are entitled to extra pay, according to the detailed guide issued by GSEE/KEPEA (the General Confederation of Greek Workers and the Labour Centre for Worker Support).

More specifically, October 28th, during which Greece celebrates the National Anniversary of “Oxi” (No) Day, is designated as a mandatory public holiday (Article 60, Law 4808/2021).
Therefore, employment is prohibited, except for businesses that hold a legal permit to operate on Sundays and holidays.

This year, October 28th falls on a Tuesday, and under certain conditions it creates a four-day weekend, which many employees have already secured by taking an extra day off.

  • Salaried employees receive their regular monthly salary without deduction.
  • Employees on a six-day schedule receive their normal pay without extra compensation, since Tuesday is a regular working day under their weekly program.

For businesses operating legally on October 28th

Companies that legally operate on the National “Oxi” Day (October 28th) are required to pay increased wages to their employees. Specifically:

  • Daily wage workers who work on October 28th are entitled to their regular daily wage plus a 75% increase calculated on their legal hourly rate.
  • Salaried employees receive a 75% increase calculated on 1/25 of their monthly salary for the hours they work.
