Grief and heartbreak at the funeral of the 39-year-old

The funeral of 39-year-old Fanouris Kargakis, who lost his life during the massacre last Saturday morning, was held in a climate of sorrow.

A large crowd gathered at the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary for the funeral service. Meanwhile, reinforced police forces were deployed at various points in the village and the surrounding area.

During the transfer of the body from the house to the church, the procession briefly stopped at the site of the massacre, where members of the 39-year-old’s family broke down in tears and cries. The funeral of the 56-year-old woman, who was also fatally injured in the massacre, will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, 4/11/2025, at the Church of the Holy Cross in Alikianou, Chania.

On the streets of Vorizia, where the massacre occurred just a few days ago, only a few people are now seen, as many residents have moved away, expressing concern about the situation and hoping for calm.

Strong police forces from Crete, along with special units that arrived from Athens, continue to conduct searches in the wider area, focusing on the three individuals being sought: a 19-year-old, a 25-year-old, and a 29-year-old, who, according to police reports, were involved in the armed incident, along with the two who are hospitalized under guard at PAGNI.

It is noted that the case file, which was filed for homicide in combination with violations of weapons laws, dangerous bodily harm, damage to property, and explosion, was submitted yesterday to the competent prosecutorial authority. The two injured individuals, against whom charges have been filed for intentional homicide as well as attempted multiple homicide jointly, are expected to testify next Thursday.

Discharge for two women who were injured in the bloody clash

The 26-year-old woman who had been injured in the bloody clash was discharged from Venizeleio Hospital.

The injured woman who was hospitalized at PAGNI is also expected to be discharged within the day.

Dimoglidu: Searches have expanded to another prefecture outside Heraklion

House searches were conducted this morning in another regional unit outside Heraklion, Hellenic Police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidu told protothema.gr.
The goal of the searches was to locate the three who are wanted and who have not been arrested.

During the searches, illegal weapons were found and the owner of one of the houses was arrested.

The searches will continue until all those involved — who the police say do exist — are located.

• 39-year-old Fanouris Kargakis was killed by an exchange of gunfire between two families on Saturday morning. A 56-year-old woman of the Frangiadakis family was also killed by gunfire.
• Everything started on Friday night when an explosive device was placed at the house of one of the families.

Dimoglidu: 3 more identified perpetrators are being sought
The Hellenic Police Spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidu stated that 3 home searches were conducted in order to determine whether they were evading arrest. Illegal weapons were found and the owner of one house was arrested. The searches will continue until all involved are located.

She said that arrest warrants will also be issued. The police believe that there are more people involved, for whom no information has been given.

Regarding the weapons, Ms. Dimoglidu said that those used in the clash have not been found. The perpetrators ensured that they disappeared the weapons. However, a hunting shotgun has been located.

At the same time she admitted that the police still do not have a clear picture of how the incident started and how many participated. The involved are the deceased and another 5 people, without considering that they are the only ones involved. From the data so far, the deceased met members of the other family by chance, an argument started and gunfire broke out.

All involved have previously occupied the police with various offences, in August and September.

At the same time, there is still no result regarding the explosive material and regarding the perpetrators of the explosion, whether physical or instigators.
