A Greek police anti-terrorism squad unit and crime lab specialists will investigate an armed bank robbery in Sykourio, near central Greece’s city of Larissa, after suspicions that the holdup is related to acts of terrorism.
The robbery took place at 2:00 pm in a Piraeus Bank branch and the criminals were very organised and acted with composure. Police believe their method is related to other cases of robberies in rural banks attributed to organized terrorism and especially to “Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei” organization.
Robbers in military fatigues, wearing wigs, fake moustaches and dark glasses entered the bank carrying pistols and after immobilizing the bank employees and four customers, who had walked in, they waited for approximately half an hour for the time-release vault to open.
They then left the bank by car after stealing 150,000 euros in cash. Their car was found burnt 500 metres away from the crime scene, where according to the eye-witnesses they boarded a black SUV driven by an accomplice and disappeared.
The police will investigate the CCTV footage from the bank, while the anti-terrorism squad suspects specific individuals. It still remains unknown whether there is evidence confirming the suspicions.
