Mimi Denissi – “The woman behind Elgin,” filming in Athens, London, Constantinople, and Mytilene

“I wanted to tell a story about human responsibility toward History through the eyes of Elgin’s wife,” says Mimi Denissi

Newsroom December 26 02:39

Mimi Denissi and the production company LUMAD have begun filming their new dramatized documentary titled “The Woman Behind Elgin,” shedding light on a lesser-known aspect of the history of the Parthenon Marbles through the perspective of Mary Nisbet, the wife of Lord Elgin.

Following extensive research, the creator uncovered original letters written by Mary Nisbet, in which—reflecting both the carelessness and lightheartedness of her youth as well as her aristocratic background—she vividly describes the events surrounding the removal of the marbles. These letters leave no doubt that the Elgins’ sole motivation was the decoration of their estate.

This revelation casts new light not only on the looting of the Parthenon Sculptures but also on the worldview of an era in which cultural plunder was considered a symbol of prestige and power.

The project is a dramatized documentary combining cinematic reenactments, historical narration, and contemporary testimony from archaeologists, historians, and experts from Greece and abroad.

Filming will take place in Athens, Mytilene, Aegina, Larissa, Eleusis, Lavrio, London, and Constantinople, tracing the historical journey of the Parthenon Marbles from 19th-century Athens to today’s global debate on their repatriation.

Mimi Denissi notes:

“Through the eyes of Elgin’s wife, I wanted to tell a story about humanity’s responsibility toward History. The Parthenon Marbles are not merely an issue of art and justice, but a constant reminder of the fine line between power and respect.”
