The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government wants to re-establish Sunday as a holiday for employees and is revoking a law liberalizing store opening hours as voted in by the previous government.
Labor Minister Panos Skourletis stated that the government “inherited a legal framework which liberalized the operation of stores on Sundays which essentially violates the meaning of Sundays for employees.” The press release issued by Skourletis pledged to overturn the relevant law.
“We are obliged to ensure the smooth operation of the market with a level playing field for small and large businesses, but at the same time we have to secure the basic labor rights of employees and the notion of free time,” he added.
