The radical leftist Greek government has reportedly told lenders that it will run out of moneyh on April 9, urgently calling for an installment of a bailout tranche to be released before a latest list of reforms is approved.
Nevertheless, that request was turned down, according to Eurozone officials’ statements to Reuters.
The plea for cash by Greece’s radical left was allegedly made during a Eurozone teleconference, which in turn had been convened in order to decide whether Athens has met prerequisites for releasing some seven billion euros on bailout money.
FinMin officials, however, dismissed speculation that the Greek side said state coffers will run dry on the date.
Interior Minister Nikos Voutsis this week raised shivers in and outside the country when he claimed the government will have to choose whether to pay salaries and pensions or the IMF on April 9, underlining that it will definitely choose the former.
A Greek official said an agreement on reforms must arrive sooner, rather than… “post mortem”.
