Democratic Left (DIMAR) deputy Vassilis Ikonomou sent a letter to the Parliament president Evangelos Meimarakis on Friday, in which he was stating he has resigned from DIMAR’s parliamentary group and has now become an independent deputy.
“I believed DIMAR could play a leading role in the unity and cooperation of this spectrum’s fragmented forces so as to submit a government proposal focusing on growth and reforms and present a commonly accepted candidate prime minister, who would be able to claim victory in the coming elections. It is obvious that these targets are no longer set by the majority of the Democratic Left party, especially after the electoral loss in the recent polls” Mr. Ikonomou said in his statement.
Ikonomou also referred to DIMAR’s “unwillingness” to cooperate with centre-leftist forces and to “an obvious lack of interest for the deputies’ opinions and positions.” The MP stressed that his participation in a government scheme like the one currently in force is absolutely meaningless for him.
