Paul Newman in a rare, unpublished photo from his visit to Athens in 1962

The legendary actor had traveled to Greece with his wife as part of an exclusive Mediterranean cruise with 500 prominent guests

Newsroom January 27 06:55

A previously unseen photograph of Paul Newman has come to light, revealed by Studio Kleisthenis on the occasion of what would have been the iconic actor’s 101st birthday. The image was taken in February 1962, during Newman’s visit to Greece.

At the time, the Hollywood legend was traveling across the Mediterranean aboard a cruise ship with his wife, Joanne Woodward. One of the cruise’s stops was Athens, where the rare snapshot was captured.

According to Studio Kleisthenis’ post on Instagram:

“On February 17, 1962, Kleisthenis photographed the great American actor Paul Newman, who was born on this day, January 26, 1925, and passed away on September 26, 2008, at the age of 83.”

The studio further explains that the unpublished photograph was taken during Newman’s visit to Athens as part of the ‘Celebrity Party Cruise’ aboard the cruise ship Leonardo da Vinci.

The cruise lasted 42 days and carried 500 distinguished guests from the worlds of art, science, and entertainment on a journey through the Mediterranean. Among the other famous actors on board—also photographed by Kleisthenis—were Gloria Swanson, Joan Fontaine, Ariel Francis, Martin Gabel, George Tobias, and others.
