Today’s weather will feature scattered drizzle, increased cloud cover, and a noticeable chill, with temperatures remaining slightly below seasonal averages. From the start of next week, however, a clear improvement is expected, as temperatures rise to 17–18°C. Anticyclonic conditions will settle in, creating a more spring-like pattern.
How the next few days will unfold
Meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas notes that temperatures on Friday stayed slightly below normal levels but within typical deviations, followed by a small rise over the weekend. From next week, the increase will be more pronounced, with maximum values reaching 17–18°C.

The weather pattern will include local cloudiness, at times denser, without significant rainfall. In the Aegean, northerly winds will blow at 6 to 7 Beaufort.
“Atmospheric mountain” ushers in spring
Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias refers to an “atmospheric mountain” that “establishes spring.”
He explains that the weekend will pass with scattered drizzle, cool conditions, and increased cloudiness. However, with the arrival of March, anticyclonic conditions will dominate. This means plenty of sunshine and rising temperatures during the first week of the month.
The light northerly breeze, as he notes, will keep the atmosphere clear, creating favorable conditions for outdoor activities and reinforcing a spring-like feel.
What is an “atmospheric mountain”?
The so-called “atmospheric mountain,” or anticyclone, is a high-pressure system—an extensive area where atmospheric pressure is higher than in surrounding regions.
It is characterized by descending air from higher atmospheric layers toward the surface. As the air sinks, it compresses, warms, and dries, leading to cloud dissipation and a significant reduction in the likelihood of rain or storms.
This creates a stable-weather “shield” that often blocks bad weather systems, delivering sunshine, light winds, and mild temperatures.
Today’s weather
Cloud cover with significant sunny intervals is expected. Local rain will occur until midday in Central Macedonia, eastern Thessaly and Central Greece, and the Peloponnese, then from midday onward in western mainland areas and the Peloponnese.
Temperatures (°C):

- Ionian Islands: 8 to 16
- Northern & Eastern Aegean Islands: 2 to 11
- Cyclades: 6 to 12
- Dodecanese: 7 to 13
- Crete: 2 to 15
Winds in the Aegean will blow from northerly directions at 4–6 Beaufort, while in the Ionian Sea they will be variable at 2–4 Beaufort.
In Athens, cloudiness with sunny spells is expected, mainly from midday onward. Northerly winds will blow at 3–5 Beaufort, with temperatures ranging from 7 to 12°C in the city center.
In the Thessaloniki region, cloud cover is expected, with a chance of weak, brief showers until morning. Winds will be variable up to 3 Beaufort, and temperatures will range from 7 to 11°C in the city center.
Weather on Sunday, 01/03/2026
In Crete and the Cyclades, local cloudiness with light rain is expected, mainly in northern Crete. In the rest of the country, generally fair weather will prevail, with a few temporary clouds in the morning over the northern Ionian, Epirus, eastern mainland areas, Evia, and the Sporades.
Visibility will be locally limited in western and northern mainland areas during the morning and evening hours.
Winds in western and northern regions will blow from easterly directions at 3–4 Beaufort, becoming variable later in the day. Elsewhere, northerly to northeasterly winds will reach 4–5 Beaufort, and 6 locally up to 7 Beaufort in the Aegean, easing slightly in the afternoon.
