Cyprus’ defense strengthened: Which countries are sending military forces after Greece

Greece immediately strengthened Cyprus’ defense by sending the frigates “Kimon” and “Psara”, along with fighter aircraft

Newsroom March 5 03:02

Cyprus has become a focal point of the latest geopolitical developments in the Middle East, as the war between Iran, Israel, and the United States has heightened tensions across the wider region.

The escalation in recent days has already affected the island. A British military air base in Akrotiri was targeted by a drone attack, prompting evacuations and a high security alert.

Greek Forces

From the very first moment, Greece responded swiftly by sending military forces to Cyprus to help protect the island.

In this context, the Greek frigates “Kimon” and “Psara” arrived in the region.

The “Kimon”, a frontline FDI HN (Belharra-class) frigate of the Hellenic Navy, is the most modern air-defense platform in Greece’s fleet. It is equipped with 32 vertical launch cells for Aster 30 missiles, capable of providing long-range area air defense.

Meanwhile, the “Psara” frigate (MEKO 200HN class) carries ESSM missiles for medium-range air defense, a Phalanx CIWS system for close protection, and advanced surveillance radar systems.

Particularly significant is also the presence of the Greek-developed electronic warfare system “Kentavros”, which has been integrated into units of the Hellenic Navy.

Athens’ assistance also includes the deployment of four F-16 Viper fighter jets, which have already been stationed at the “Andreas Papandreou” air base in Paphos, strengthening Cyprus’ air defense.

Which Other Countries Are Sending Forces to Cyprus

Following Monday’s (March 2) attack on the British military air base at Akrotiri, the United Kingdom took immediate steps to reinforce security in Cyprus.

According to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the UK is deploying Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters, equipped with Martlet missiles to counter aerial threats, as well as the destroyer HMS Dragon.

The warship is expected to depart from Portsmouth next week after being loaded with ammunition and will reinforce naval operations and regional protection.

At the same time, France announced the arrival of a multi-mission frigate off the coast of Cyprus as part of the military reinforcements it is sending to strengthen the island’s defense. Alongside the frigate, missile defense systems and anti-drone systems are also being deployed to protect Cyprus from possible aerial threats.

Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands

It was also announced today that Spain will send the frigate “Cristóbal Colón” to the Eastern Mediterranean to provide protection for Cyprus.

The vessel is the most modern ship in the Spanish Navy. During its mission, the frigate will carry out protection and air-defense operations, while also assisting in evacuation missions for civilians from high-risk areas.

According to Spain’s Ministry of Defense, the frigate—initially participating in naval operations in the Baltic Sea—is expected to reach the coast of Crete around March 10, strengthening international security efforts in the region.

Italy and the Netherlands will also send naval forces in the coming days to help protect Cyprus.

“Italians, French, Dutch, and Spaniards will likely send assistance to Cyprus at the security level,” said Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto in the Italian parliament.
