The New Left appears to be heading toward a rupture, as Alexis Haritsis is reported to have made decisions regarding his future leadership of the party, against the backdrop of broader developments in the center-left and the activities of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

As protothema.gr reported several days ago, an intra-party conflict is imminent, even if it develops in the coming hours into a “velvet divorce.”

In recent hours, the possibility of Alexis Haritsis resigning from the party leadership has intensified—a resignation that was narrowly avoided at the party Congress last January—given that within the party a majority faction has emerged calling for a more radical version of the party and corresponding alliances, with the party Secretary, Gavriil Sakellaridis, as an informal leader.

In such a scenario, part of the New Left’s Parliamentary Group might also depart, including Efi Achtsioglou, Dimitris Tzanakopoulos, Nasos Iliopoulos, and others, as most members rally around Alexis Haritsis. Haritsis is seen as a figure who could be welcomed not only by SYRIZA-PS or a potential “Tsipras party,” but also within Harilaou Trikoupi.

On the other side, a more radical choice is expected from former “Umbrella” members, such as Nikos Filis, Panos Skourletis, and others, as well as younger party members who would not oppose left-leaning alliances. Recently, they have fueled speculation about possible cooperation even with Yanis Varoufakis’ party.
