Marinakis: Elections will take place in 2027, Prime Minister rejects any proposals for early polls

“Holding early elections just to gain in the polls is, at the very least, irresponsible. This is not Kyriakos Mitsotakis, this is not New Democracy,” said government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, dismissing speculation about snap elections

Newsroom March 28 11:46

Speaking to Real FM, Marinakis emphasized that the next elections are scheduled for 2027, and the Prime Minister does not entertain suggestions for an early vote. “Even if someone wanted to propose it, the moment the discussion starts, it’s immediately rejected,” he added.

Stability Amid Crisis

Marinakis pointed out that Greece is currently facing a major crisis due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, where stability is essential not only economically but also at a broader strategic level. He stressed that the government has maintained stability, enabling rapid decision-making, such as support for Cyprus, financial measures, and an economy recovering from previous setbacks.

“From being 27th in Europe in growth in 2019, with 570,000 more unemployed, Greece now generates surpluses and funds essential measures to keep society afloat,” Marinakis noted.

No Early Elections for Political Gain

The government spokesperson criticized the idea of using rising poll numbers to justify early elections: “When you face such major issues, exploiting public sentiment for elections eight months, ten months, or a year early is the least responsible approach. Simply put, this is not Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and frankly, it’s not New Democracy.”

He added that he has never proposed early elections to the Prime Minister and is unsure if others have, but emphasized: “We live in a democracy, everyone can share their opinion. Even if someone came forward to suggest this—which I don’t know—the Prime Minister simply does not consider it.”

Focus on 2027 and Long-Term Goals

Marinakis concluded that elections will take place in 2027 for two main reasons. First, the government prioritizes the national interest over short-term political gains. “Unlike many in the past who placed personal polling ahead of the country’s interest, this party and Kyriakos Mitsotakis do not,” he said.

Second, New Democracy aims to be judged on its record over a full four-year term. “Average wages have already exceeded €1,500 for full-time employment, the minimum wage is approaching the pre-election target of €950, and major infrastructure projects are on track for delivery in the coming months,” Marinakis added.
