A 61-year-old former Siemens Hellas executive was found dead on Sunday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His body was found in the foothills beneath Mt. Hymettus, which overlooks greater Athens from the east.

A suicide note and weapon were located next to the body, with the handwriting on the note reportedly matching the victim’s. The reason cited was economic problems.

The man, identified with the initials “K.P.”, was known from his past involvement in the controversial procurement of the C4I security system ahead of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He also appeared as a close associate of a man subsequently charged with several felony fraud charges against the state, all related to the security contract.

After he left Siemens Hellas, he established his own company, which reportedly racked up excessive debts before closing.
