US Department of War: What are the… UFOs over the Aegean seen by American pilots in 2023 and 2024

The unknown flying objects are described as having reached speeds of 800 km/h, while in two cases they made 90-degree course changes - Possibly technological systems or “misinterpreted natural recordings”

“The truth is out there,” was the most iconic phrase of “The X-Files,” the 90s mystery series about UFOs. The truth, it turns out, really was… out here, as revealed by the first batch of declassified files released by the US Department of War regarding Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP).

This is because we now see the first three Pentagon reports of UFO sightings in Greece, as well as videos from the Aegean Sea, something that suggests more revelations will follow in upcoming releases.

The sightings occurred on three occasions between October 2023 and January 2024. Of course, they were not the first, as there are dozens of reports in Greece as well, with the Atalanti incident of the 90s becoming known as the “Greek Roswell.”

However, unlike the original Roswell, which still troubles UFO researchers regarding whether there was a cover-up—and includes new mysteries such as the disappearance of the airbase commander who recovered the UFO—the official explanation was that the objects seen by witnesses were not UFOs, but satellites.

What the pilots saw

The reports from the first released files appear to come from American pilots at NATO bases in Greece. They also include video footage (apparently taken from fighter jets) tracking the Flying Objects with their cameras.

Although they are too far away to draw safe conclusions about their identity, in one case the object described by the American pilot as “diamond-shaped” is estimated to have moved over the Aegean at about 800 km/h, which is the cruising speed of a civilian aircraft.

The UAP is described in the report as being detectable only via a short-wave infrared sensor (SWIR) in both cases, and it performed 90-degree course changes—extremely difficult for an aircraft—with the object disappearing from sensors when focus changed.

Images released were captured by specialized aircraft sensors

Visible only in a specific spectrum

In the second case, in 2024, the object is described by the American pilot as looking “visually like an inverted teardrop with a vertical linear mass hanging underneath.” From the video observation, aside from its extraordinary speed, it could resemble a kite!

With a diamond-like shape and a trailing extension, it could have broken the previous recorded kite altitude record of 4,879 meters, as well as speed. On the other hand, it cannot be explained why it was only visible through SWIR infrared sensors of the fighter jet… In the first 162 files released by the Pentagon, State Department, FBI, and NASA, there are three reports of UFO sightings in Greece over the Aegean.

US military reports of “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena” (UAP) in Greek airspace

These are Mission Reports (MISREP) from the US military documenting the circumstances surrounding operations from Greece. The report dated October 27, 2023 states: “They detected a UAP flying just above the sea surface. The UAP performed multiple 90-degree turns at an estimated speed of 80 mph. At 0038Z [redacted] lost the UAP from their image.”

The second report is just two days later: “At 0811Z, [redacted] was returning to base (RTB) when they detected a UAP flying just above the sea surface. The UAP flew straight toward land. At 0811Z [redacted] lost the UAP from their image.”

In the published files there is also another unresolved UAP sighting in Greece, dated January 2024. In it, a US military operator reported observing a UAP, estimating its speed at “approximately 434 knots (800 km/h).”

Watch video from January 2024:

The observer described the UAP as diamond-shaped, with a sensor beneath it that did not perform maneuvers. He also noted that the UAP was only visible when observed through a short-wave infrared (SWIR) sensor. The event reportedly lasted about two minutes.

The “Greek Roswell”

As the published American files include incidents with video and reports ranging from the historic Apollo 17 mission to the Moon in 1972 (showing three bright dots above the Moon) to 2025, with unidentified objects in cigar or diamond shapes moving strangely, the big question is whether we will see reports that provide answers or confirmations of famous UFO sightings.

In Greece, the most famous such incident occurred in Atalanti on September 2, 1990, when hundreds of eyewitnesses reported a series of 13 luminous objects crossing the country. One of them appeared to be burning and allegedly landed near Atalanti.

Greek authorities stated they found “terrestrial-origin debris,” as indicated by markings and letters such as “Φ,” suggesting a Soviet satellite.

A similar incident was described by Thanasis Veggos with hundreds of vacationers in Tolo, Argolis, when a bright object appeared on the sea horizon, performing sudden and irregular movements before stopping above the water.

In February 1978, Olympic Airways crew and passengers reported being chased by a round luminous object, while on Christmas night of the same year, radar operators and pilots at a military airport reported intense lights performing “non-conventional movements.”

What are these objects being recorded? What are the possible explanations for their origin? Are they extraterrestrial or man-made constructs? “I want to believe,” as the characters of “The X-Files” used to say…
