The high cost of living in the United Kingdom led one family to leave their life in Hertfordshire behind and start over in Greece, seeking a calmer and more affordable lifestyle.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, 43-year-old Renee Wasik moved with her husband, Pawel, and their two-year-old daughter to Lefkada last November, leaving behind what they describe as the extremely high living costs in Britain. Today, according to Renee, the family enjoys a much higher quality of life at a significantly lower cost.

Renee works in public relations as the head of a company, while her husband Pawel runs a painting and decorating business.

€3,500 rent in Britain

Until recently, the couple was paying around €3,500 per month for rent and bills in the UK. While their new house is being built, they are temporarily living in a two-bedroom apartment in Lefkada, paying around €500 per month, including utilities.

At the same time, they say their weekly shopping for fruits and vegetables from local markets costs no more than €23.

The 43-year-old describes her new daily routine as completely different from the one she had in the UK. As she explains, she now often works outdoors “under orange trees,” while her young daughter plays in nature.

“Weekends include walks at the marina, sailing, visits to waterfalls, and meeting friends for beers that cost just €2,” she says.

How they decided to move to Greece

The decision to make the big move came spontaneously during a vacation in Greece, when the couple found a plot of land for sale and decided to make an offer, which was immediately accepted.

Although some expenses, such as fuel and gym memberships, remain similar to those in Britain, Renee says everyday life in Greece is far more enjoyable and human-centered.

Local products have become an important part of their new lifestyle, with Renee saying she is especially impressed by the fresh olive oil, honey, and the overall connection to local production and nature.

She admits she misses the convenience of delivery apps and online shopping, but believes that “the peace, the space, and the beauty” of life in Greece make up for every change in their routine.

“We spend less and live much better. It’s not about earning more money, but about needing less and choosing a different way of life,” she concludes.
