The Prosecutor’s Office of the Supreme Court has decided to request the annulment of the decision that led to the release of Alexandros Giotopoulos, who was convicted to 17 life sentences for his role in the terrorist organization “17 November.”

Deputy Prosecutor Sofoklis Logothetis, who reviewed the case file, concluded that Giotopoulos—the ideological leader of the 17 November murders—was wrongly released, because he has not served the full sentence required by law, which is 25 years.

The appeal for annulment was also filed because, according to the senior prosecutor’s assessment, the substantive conditions for release were not met; in particular, neither the legal reasoning of the original ruling nor the conditions justifying the release of a multiple life-sentence prisoner had changed.

As a result, the President of the Supreme Court, as she is entitled to do by law, will immediately convene a judicial council to examine the prosecutor’s proposal. If it is accepted, Alexandros Giotopoulos will be returned to prison.

The Supreme Court judicial council is expected to be scheduled within the first ten days of June.
