Direct attacks were launched against Alexis Tsipras and Maria Karystianou by Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his introductory remarks at the Cabinet meeting, describing a political environment of “confusion and populism,” with a common denominator — as he said — the opposition to the government.

The Prime Minister referred to “new parties with newly appearing or reappearing protagonists who wear a different mask, while they are already known from their public presence.”

At the same time, Mr. Mitsotakis spoke of “institutional, supposedly, forces that are losing their seriousness and credibility,” describing a “political Babel” with the only common element being the condemnation of the government. As an example, he cited the stance of PASOK in the vote on the renewal of Yannis Stournaras’s term at the Bank of Greece, noting that it did not vote in favor of the renewal.

Turning to the economy, the Prime Minister emphasized that the government continues to support incomes in the face of extraordinary crises, while at the same time implementing policies that — as he said — “consolidate the country’s progress.”

In this context, he announced that the diesel subsidy is extended for June with support of 15 cents per liter, stressing that the price will remain about 30 cents lower compared to March. He also announced that at the end of June a one-off allowance of €150 per child will be paid to families.

Mr. Mitsotakis linked the government’s strategy to international uncertainty, noting that “citizens understand the importance of stability and security,” adding that this was also the message recorded in the recent elections in Cyprus.

Bills with a social and reform-oriented focus are included in today’s Cabinet agenda, with Kyriakos Mitsotakis currently delivering his introduction.
