At least four people lost their lives in a collision between a train and a school bus in Buggenhout, Belgium, according to local media reports. The victims include two of the children, the bus driver and the escort.
The information about the victims was announced by federal Transport Minister Jean-Luc Crucke.

According to Belgian media, the train was still about one kilometre away from the station and had already started braking. At 8:08, the school bus entered the railway crossing. The barriers were already closed, as shown in surveillance camera footage. A spokesperson for Infrabel, Belgium’s railway infrastructure authority, stated: “The images show that the barriers were closed and the light was red. We do not know how the accident was caused.”
The number of dead and injured is not yet fully known. Around 100 passengers from the train have already exited the carriages and are receiving assistance. The school bus, a small van, was reportedly carrying seven students, the driver and an escort. According to information from the federal police, the bus was heading to a special school attended by secondary education students.
“Such tragic news,” Flemish Education Minister Zuhal Demir wrote on social media. “My thoughts are with all the victims, their families and everyone directly connected to the incident.”
