The Turkish newspaper “Türkiye” has published a highly provocative front-page story on the anniversary of the Fall of Constantinople, using the occasion to issue new threats against Greece.

The development is particularly notable as “Türkiye” is one of the largest and most pro-government newspapers in Turkey, giving added political weight to the messages it conveys.

“‘The Greeks are itching,’” the Turkish newspaper writes.

On the front page, an image of Mehmed the Conqueror dominates, while the article adopts incendiary rhetoric toward Athens. Among other claims, it states that “the Greeks are itching,” essentially suggesting that the Greek side is seeking opportunities for tension, at a time when debate is ongoing over the emerging Turkish draft legislation on the “Blue Homeland.”

The newspaper also reports that Turkish fighter jets conducted low-altitude flights over Kastellorizo. It even plays on words with “Kaşınıyorlar,” highlighting the word “Kaş” in yellow letters, referring to the town of Kaş, which lies just two kilometers from the Greek island.

At the same time, other Turkish media outlets are also increasing their rhetoric against Greece.

A notable example is the newspaper Cumhuriyet, which refers to a “reheating of waters in the Aegean,” accusing Athens of continuing the militarization of islands. It places particular emphasis on Karpathos, presenting Greek defense measures as a factor increasing regional tension, reiterating long-standing Turkish positions.
