Traffic in the area has been fully restored after earlier road closures that were imposed to facilitate firefighting operations and ensure public safety.

A significant firefighting force remains deployed at the scene to contain any flare-ups and secure the affected area. Operations involve 120 firefighters, supported by four specialized ground teams from the 1st Forest Fire Operations Unit (EMODE) and 35 fire engines.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, while firefighters work to extinguish remaining hotspots and prevent the fire from reigniting due to weather conditions.

Videos and photographs from the scene show extensive firefighting efforts throughout the day, with ground crews and aerial resources working together to bring the blaze under control.

A wildfire broke out Monday afternoon in an area of dry grass and vacant lots in Spata, between the town and Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos.”

A strong firefighting force has been mobilized to contain the blaze, including 45 firefighters, two specialized ground teams from the 1st Forest Fire Operations Unit (EMODE), 13 fire engines, three helicopters, and two firefighting aircraft. Volunteers and water tankers from local authorities are also assisting in the effort.

Strong winds in the area are making firefighting operations more difficult.

According to local reports, the fire is moving toward AEK Athens’ training facilities, specifically near Petrou and Pavlou Street.

Traffic restrictions in Spata

Authorities have suspended vehicle traffic on Rethymnis Street in Spata.

The closure affects the section of the road near the Paiania–Spata Provincial Road, due to the ongoing firefighting operation.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and follow instructions from authorities, as traffic restrictions will remain in place until safety operations are completed.

Fire also burning in Akraifnio, Boeotia

At the same time, another wildfire is ongoing in a forested area near Akraifnio, in the regional unit of Boeotia.

Shortly before 4:00 p.m., Greece’s emergency alert system 112 sent a warning message to residents and visitors in the area, urging them to remain on alert.

The message read:

“Forest fire in the area of Akraifnio, Regional Unit of Boeotia. Remain prepared and follow the instructions of the authorities.”

Large aerial response deployed

For the Boeotia fire, authorities have mobilized:

  • 30 firefighters
  • 9 fire engines
  • 7 firefighting aircraft
  • 1 helicopter

Combined with the aerial resources operating in Spata, a total of 13 aircraft and helicopters are involved in firefighting efforts across the two active wildfires.

Authorities continue to monitor both fronts closely as strong winds increase the risk of further spread.
