Greek police are investigating new evidence in the killing of a 15-year-old boy in the southern Athenian neighbourhood of Kallithea, south of Athens, on Wednesday night, June 24, as officers examine whether the case may be linked to an earlier incident in which another minor was injured in the same area.

The initial theory that the fatal clash was connected to football fan violence is now being ruled out, while police have already made arrests and formally identified the victim.

Authorities are also examining information about a previous incident in Kallithea a few days earlier, during which a 16-year-old was reportedly injured. No complaint was filed at the time, and no official police report was made. The 16-year-old is not among those taken into custody in the current case, but investigators are looking into whether the two incidents may be connected and whether the later clash may have involved retaliation.

According to the evidence gathered so far, the 15-year-old victim was reportedly inside a vehicle that arrived at the scene after the confrontation had already begun. Police are examining this detail closely, as it may point to a different sequence of events from the one initially believed.

A key development in the case was the arrest of the suspect at his home at around 3:00 a.m. on Thursday. Shortly afterwards, he reportedly confessed to the killing. According to reports, his mother was in a state of shock when officers arrived to arrest her son.

Timeline of the incident

The victim was attacked during a violent altercation outside an apartment building on Megaloupoleos, in Kallithea.

Police found a knife at the scene. According to the suspect, however, it was not the weapon used in the attack, as he reportedly told officers that he had thrown the knife used in the killing into a rubbish bin after the altercation.

An ambulance from EKAB, Greece’s emergency medical service, rushed to the scene and took the boy in serious condition to Ippokratio Hospital in Athens, where he died a short time later despite doctors’ efforts.

In connection with the case, 13 people have been taken into custody, with four of them expected to be formally arrested.
