John Bolton, former national security adviser to Donald Trump, pleaded guilty to mishandling classified documents, which he had in his possession without authorization.
During a hearing on Friday in federal court in Maryland, when asked by the judge if he was guilty, Bolton replied: “I am, Your Honor, and I’m sorry for that.”
Bolton’s plea agreement, in which he admits that he shared sensitive national security information with his wife and daughter, is equivalent to a felony charge that could result in a prison sentence, according to CNN.
The plea agreement reached by prosecutors and Bolton’s defense attorneys calls for a prison sentence not to exceed five years (60 months), as well as a fine of $2.25 million. The first half of this fine will be paid within five days of the sentencing, according to prosecutors.
The sentencing hearing for the former national security adviser is scheduled for October 28 in Greenbelt, Maryland.
Bolton, once a close associate of Trump, is now one of the fiercest critics of the President’s policies.
