Greek PM Alexis Tsipras reverted to a more populist style in speaking before members of ruling SYRIZA’s Parliamentary Group on Tuesday, using language that appears to show a willingness for a “clash” with creditors.
The radical leftist leader opted against a position of “preparing” MPs for a successful compromised, instead using the following phrases:
– They are trying to humiliate the government and the people
-They came back with an unreasonable proposal
-Their obsession with austerity measures and cuts conceals a political expediency to humiliate an entire people
-We, as a Parliament, have no way of accepting an IMF-inspired program
-The (economic) oligarchy will pay for the crisis
-The decision of who will be paying taxes in this country is up to its government
Tsipras also apparently eschewed an up-until-now policy of trying to play one creditor versus another, namely, the IMF and the Europeans. On Tuesday, he blamed all lenders.
Yanis on the floor
Meanwhile, off the podium and on the …floor was the Greek FinMin, Yanis Varoufakis, sitting cross-legged — scene that either shows the non-conformist nature of the “game theorist”, or, a well-timed PR photo-opportunity.
The always-busy Yanis was late in arriving in the senate chamber after a flight from Irakleio, Crete, where on Monday he spoke to supporters of the radical leftist SYRIZA party in an out-door address.
As expected, the uber-casual image of Varoufakis sitting cross-legged made the social media rounds, a development that’s bound to satisfy the media-savvy Yanis.
