A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering Ann Widdecombe, the outspoken Reform UK Immigration and Justice spokeswoman, at her home near Dartmoor National Park. The 78-year-old former Conservative minister was found with critical injuries on July 9, 2026, and died overnight, prompting a major police investigation.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the arrest of a local white British man from Newton Abbot. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated there were no indications of terrorism or political motivation at this stage, though the full circumstances remain under investigation. Forensics teams continue to examine the scene as tributes pour in from across the political spectrum.

Ann Noreen Widdecombe, 78, enjoyed a distinguished political career spanning decades. She served as Conservative MP for Maidstone and The Weald from 1987 to 2010, holding roles including Minister of State for Prisons and Shadow Home Secretary. After leaving Parliament, she joined the Brexit Party and later Reform UK in 2023, becoming a prominent voice on immigration and justice issues. She was known for her forthright style and strong Christian faith.

A widely shared video clip attached to breaking news of her death highlights one of her most memorable stances. In the footage, Widdecombe passionately argues against the modern notion of shielding people from discomfort in public discourse. She declared: “Nobody has the right to live being protected from offense or from insult or from hurt feelings. It is an [essential] part of living in society.”

This reflected her lifelong commitment to robust free speech and opposition to what she saw as excessive political correctness or “safe space” culture. Widdecombe consistently championed the idea that open debate, even when offensive, is fundamental to a free society – a position that often placed her at odds with progressive sensitivities on topics ranging from immigration to social issues.

Nigel Farage and colleagues across parties have paid tribute to her as a formidable and principled politician who never shied away from controversy. Her death has sparked widespread shock and calls for calm amid ongoing investigations.

Ann Widdecombe leaves behind a legacy as one of Britain’s most distinctive political figures – a fearless advocate for traditional values, law and order, and unapologetic free expression. The investigation into her murder continues.
