More than 500 million euros in funding for sport, 500 infrastructure projects currently underway and the creation of DEAV (the Authority for Combating Sports Violence) to tackle fan violence are among the achievements outlined in a three-year progress report presented on Tuesday by Greece’s Ministry of Sport.

On fan violence, the ministry points to the creation of DEAV, the introduction of objective and fast-track penalties, the installation of state-of-the-art cameras in stadiums, and electronic ticket identification.

Through the reform of the e-Kouros platform, Greek sport was digitally recorded for the first time, a move presented as strengthening transparency and accountability in the sector’s governance.

On the financial side, funding for sport has more than doubled, reaching 500 million euros in the current four-year Olympic cycle, with the money directed towards clubs, federations, athletes, coaches and National Sports Centres. Benefits for athletes with top achievements have also been expanded, applied retroactively from 2012.

On infrastructure, more than 500 projects are currently in progress across the country.

The progress report, covering the period since he took over political responsibility for sport, was presented by Sport Minister Giannis Vroutsis, marking three years since his appointment to the role on 28 July 2023.

In his post, he outlined the key reforms and initiatives pursued during this period, stating that the foundations have been laid for a more modern, safe and organised Greek sport sector.
