Greek dancer Naima Gerasopoulou has reached the top of the tango world, winning the title of world champion alongside her partner, Lucas Gauto, at the major Tango de Pista 2026 competition in Buenos Aires.

The prestigious victory came amid a standing ovation, with the audience warmly applauding the pair as confetti filled the stage and the two dancers raised the trophy. Gerasopoulou celebrated with the Greek flag, while her partner held the Argentine flag. Greece’s presence thus took center stage at the world’s most important tango competition — often described as the Tango World Cup — in front of a packed theater and thousands of viewers watching online from around the world.

For Naima Gerasopoulou, the world title carries even greater significance considering that her relationship with tango began almost by chance in Greece.

“When I started in Greece, honestly, I didn’t even know what tango was. I didn’t even know it existed,” she said, recalling the moment she first discovered the power of the dance. What captivated her, she explained, was the unique connection between the two dancers.

“What I felt was a genuine embrace from someone I didn’t know. I wondered how it was possible to embrace someone so closely and so genuinely when I had never met that person in my life. That was what enchanted me. It made me fall completely in love with tango,” she said following her major achievement.

ARGENTINA WON THE 2026 TANGO WORLD CUP 🐐🐐

There were more than 800 couples from around the world.

In the pista category, a dancer from Córdoba won with a Greek woman (Lucas Gauto and Naima Gerasopoulou).

And in the senior category, a dancer from Tucumán won with a woman from Buenos Aires (Aldo Adrián Romero and Marcela Pilatti).

The dedication that followed eventually took her from her first steps in Greece to the top of the world in Buenos Aires, the city considered the birthplace and global home of tango.

By her side, Lucas Gauto also saw a two-decade-long dream come true. As he revealed, from the very first time he competed in the World Championship, he had set himself the goal of one day winning the title.

The final featured leading dancers from countries including Russia, Turkey, Japan, Indonesia and Kazakhstan, making the achievement of the Greek champion and her partner all the more remarkable.
