The moment Amazon’s plane runs off the runway leaving 5 dead; Safety system could have prevented the tragedy

Amazon Air's cargo fleet has recorded two fatal crashes in seven years, the earlier one in Texas blamed on a co-pilot who had concealed prior training failures. Miami's runways lack the arresting system the FAA recommends but does not require

Footage shared on social media captured the moment of the tragedy at Miami International Airport, when an Amazon cargo aircraft ran off the landing runway and crashed into vehicles, killing five people.

According to FAA spokeswoman Hannah Walden, Miami International Airport’s runways are not fitted with the Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS), a specially designed crushable concrete material intended to safely bring aircraft to a halt when they overrun the length of the runway.

As the New York Times notes, the FAA has for years recommended that airports install the system, though the recommendation is not mandatory, and airports are permitted to use other FAA-approved methods to reduce the risk of aircraft running off runways.

In another video, the Boeing 767-300 can be seen landing, but for some reason its rear right wheel fails to touch the ground, leading many to question the aircraft’s approach speed.

Beyond the 5 fatalities, another 5 were Amazon Airinjured

The aircraft that crashed was built in 1994, according to Cirium’s records, with Boeing describing it as the “most flexible” and “cost-effective” mid-size wide-body freighter, with a total cargo volume of 15,469 cubic feet. The doomed aircraft had taken off from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

This is the second serious accident in Amazon Air’s history. In February 2019, a cargo aircraft flying from Miami to Houston crashed into a swampy area in Texas, killing all three people on board. That investigation attributed the crash to human error, after the co-pilot, who had concealed previous training failures at other airlines, became disoriented and sent the aircraft into a steep descent.

Amazon Air, the company’s cargo airline, is a key part of its global distribution network, operating more than 250 flights a day. The company was founded in 2015 and operates around 100 leased aircraft, which carry parcels between roughly 60 airports across Asia, Europe, North America, the Middle East and Africa. It was originally named “Prime Air” but was renamed “Amazon Air” in 2017 to distinguish it from Amazon’s autonomous drone delivery service, which now carries the “Prime Air” brand. Nevertheless, many Amazon Air aircraft, including the one that crashed on Sunday at Miami Airport, still bear the Prime Air logo.

Sunday’s accident recalled another air disaster at Miami International Airport in August 1997, when a Fine Air cargo aircraft crashed on take-off, sliding through an open field and across a busy highway. Five people died at the time, including the driver of a car.
