Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias has signed off on the inclusion of 11 new projects to build, upgrade and improve municipal sports facilities across ten municipalities in Attica, with a total public expenditure of 15.54 million euros. The decision was taken as part of a call for proposals under the Attica Regional Development Programme (RDP) 2026-2030, which is funded through the national arm of the Public Investment Programme (PIP).

With the new inclusions, the municipalities of Agioi Anargyroi-Kamatero, Agia Varvara, Aigaleo, Ilion, Kallithea, Lavreotiki, Papagou-Cholargos, Petroupoli, Saronikos and Chaidari will be able to upgrade, modernise, maintain and equip key sports facilities, improving functionality, safety, accessibility and the quality of sporting services they provide to residents.

The interventions cover a wide range of needs, including the construction of new sports facilities, the reconstruction of pitches and athletics tracks, the replacement of playing surfaces, upgrades to changing rooms, sanitary facilities and electromechanical infrastructure, the installation of modern lighting, the supply of sports equipment, and the installation of air-supported domes.

Speaking on the signing of the decisions, Hardalias said: “By drawing on the resources available under the Attica Regional Development Programme 2026-2030, we are proceeding with an extensive intervention to upgrade municipal sports infrastructure across ten municipalities in Attica. Each of these projects leaves its own distinct mark. Some create new sports facilities, while others restore existing infrastructure that serves athletes, clubs, schools, children and citizens of all ages on a daily basis. What all the projects have in common is safety, functionality, accessibility and energy efficiency, so that municipalities can provide better and higher-quality services for everyone.

“From the outset, the regional authority has placed emphasis on upgrading and improving the sports infrastructure of first-tier local authorities, since these form a core part of everyday life in our neighbourhoods. This is where our children train, where sports clubs are based, where grassroots sport is supported, and where thousands of residents are given the chance to make exercise part of their lives.

“Through close cooperation with municipal authorities, we identify priorities and secure funding for mature projects with a clear social benefit. Our aim is for every available euro to be converted into a substantive project with a measurable outcome for people’s daily lives. This is exactly the philosophy behind our use of every available funding tool.

“Under the 2021-2027 NSRF (National Strategic Reference Framework), within two and a half years Attica rose from eighth to first place nationally in the absorption of European funds, out of 22 regional and sectoral programmes. That achievement only carries real value for us when the available resources are quickly and effectively converted into projects that reach every neighbourhood and improve people’s daily lives. Following the inclusion of the 11 new projects, what is now required is consistency, close cooperation and systematic monitoring, so that the interventions proceed correctly and are delivered to local communities as swiftly and safely as possible.”

The sports projects included in the 11 new schemes

Working closely with the relevant municipalities and beneficiaries of the call, the following projects have been included under the Attica Regional Development Programme (RDP) 2026-2030, listed in alphabetical order of municipality.

“Supply of equipment for the maintenance and upgrade of sports facilities in the Municipality of Agioi Anargyroi-Kamatero,” with a total budget of 1,500,000 euros

The works involve the restoration and upgrade of sports flooring, changing rooms and sanitary facilities, as well as infrastructure at the learners’ swimming pool. New window and door frames, heating and cooling equipment, electrical panels, lighting fixtures, wiring and other electrical infrastructure will also be supplied and installed.

The works will take place at sports facilities belonging to the 1st Junior High School and 1st Senior High School of Kamatero, the 2nd Senior High School of Kamatero, the site near the old Agioi Anargyroi Town Hall on Tripoleos Street, the 5th and 10th Primary Schools of Agioi Anargyroi, the Agioi Anargyroi and Kamatero indoor gymnasiums, the learners’ swimming pool, the building on Theotokou Street, and the open-air football pitch on Leoforos Dimokratias.

Mayor of Agioi Anargyroi-Kamatero Stavros Tsirmpas said: “Our residents deserve modern, safe and high-quality sports facilities. This is the standard we want for our town, and it is what we have been working steadily towards in recent years. The new programme agreement with the Attica Region to upgrade our municipality’s pitches and sports facilities is another substantial step in that direction. I want to personally thank Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias, since with his support we are securing resources and delivering projects that leave a real mark on our town.”

“Construction of an indoor swimming pool in the Municipality of Agia Varvara,” with a total budget of 5,000,000 euros

The project involves building a new indoor, bioclimatic training swimming pool on a plot of 1,458.54 square metres, at the junction of Ippokratous and Kykladon streets. The facility will have a five-lane swimming pool suitable for training as well as inter-club and inter-municipal competitions. The accompanying building will include changing rooms for athletes and staff, sanitary facilities, a medical room, a canteen, administrative areas, storage rooms, public service areas, and a basement to house the electromechanical installations.

Mayor of Agia Varvara Lambros Michos said: “Today an important project for our town is moving towards implementation: an indoor bioclimatic swimming pool at the heart of the town. Every major project of this kind undeniably improves the quality of life for our people, particularly when it concerns projects carried out in western Athens, which continues to experience a kind of environmental apartheid. The undeniable truth, however, is that under the Hardalias administration, balancing policies and corresponding allocations are now being applied that can gradually ease these glaring inequalities, and this makes us particularly optimistic about our shared future.”

“Reconstruction of the open-air sports facilities at the Eva Christodoulou Municipal Athletics Centre in the Municipality of Aigaleo,” with a total budget of 1,700,000 euros

The works involve upgrading the municipal athletics centre located on Souliou Street and by Aigaleo Grove, covering an area of around 13,500 square metres, including the replacement of the ageing synthetic turf, the installation of a new synthetic athletics track surface (tartan), and the creation of facilities for athletics events such as hammer throw, long jump and other jumping events. Damaged railings and metal gates will also be replaced, and an automatic irrigation system will be installed.

Mayor of Aigaleo Lambros Sklavounos said: “The reconstruction of the open-air sports facilities at the Eva Christodoulou Municipal Athletics Centre represents an important investment in Aigaleo’s sports infrastructure and in the creation of modern, safe spaces for sport. With funding from the Attica Region, we are carrying out a substantial upgrade of the municipal athletics centre, creating modern, safe and functional spaces for athletes, sports clubs and the local community. We warmly thank Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias for his cooperation and support in delivering a project of significant benefit to our town.”

“Reconstruction of the Ilion Municipal Stadium,” with a total budget of 2,200,000 euros

The project involves the full modernisation of the sports facility located within Antonis Tritsis Park. It includes the installation of new synthetic turf covering 6,200 square metres and a new synthetic athletics track surface covering 5,200 square metres with full line marking, the upgrade of lighting with new poles and energy-efficient LED fixtures, repairs to the stands, the modernisation of drainage and irrigation systems, and the supply of new sports equipment.

Mayor of Ilion Andriana Alevizou said: “The reconstruction of the Ilion Municipal Stadium (Municipal Athletics Centre) is one of the major projects of our term that will substantially change the face of sport in our town. Its significance goes beyond a single sports facility: it concerns the new generation, quality of life and the overall future of sport in the municipality of Ilion. With today’s inclusion, a need that has existed for many years is being addressed, a longstanding demand is being funded, and a project of real importance is moving from planning into practice. I thank the Attica Region and personally Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias for their substantial cooperation. Our town, Ilion, is not waiting for tomorrow. It is building it today.”

“Supply of a synthetic rubber track (tartan) system and equipment for the Kallithea Municipal Stadium,” with a total budget of 659,680 euros

The project involves the full replacement of the worn rubber athletics track and the supply of the necessary competition equipment. The works include removing the existing surface, installing a new certified synthetic track covering around 4,600 square metres, fitting new take-off boards for the long jump events, and installing new dividing kerbs around the track.

Mayor of Kallithea Kostas Askounis said: “Replacing the tartan track at the Grigoris Lambrakis Kallithea Municipal Stadium is a substantial investment in sport, in the new generation and in the quality of life in our town. In an area where competition-standard athletics facilities are now limited, the Kallithea Municipal Stadium becomes even more significant for athletes, clubs and residents. Our cooperation with the Attica Region and Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias allows us to carry out interventions that substantially upgrade our sports infrastructure and create better, safer conditions for sport for everyone.”

“Replacement of the synthetic turf at the Giorgos Rafias pitch in the Municipality of Lavreotiki,” with a total budget of 449,999 euros

The project involves replacing the synthetic turf and upgrading the sub-base of the football pitch. It also includes the supply of two new goals and substitute benches, the installation of a drainage system beneath the pitch, and the creation of a cooling (irrigation) system for the turf.

“Supply of an air-supported dome in the Municipality of Lavreotiki,” with a total budget of 492,503 euros

The project involves supplying, positioning and installing the equipment and materials required to build an air-supported dome to cover sports activities in Building Block 195 of the Keratea Municipal Community.

Mayor of Lavreotiki Dimitris Loukas said: “Today’s decision to include these two important sports infrastructure upgrade projects meets genuine needs and longstanding requests from our municipality’s sports clubs. The new synthetic turf at the Giorgos Rafias pitch in Lavrio ensures a modern, safe playing surface, while the air-supported dome at the Ioannis Mengoulis Keratea Indoor Gymnasium guarantees uninterrupted year-round use regardless of weather conditions. These are projects that will benefit hundreds of children, young people and sports participants in Lavrio and Keratea. I thank Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias for his steady support for Lavreotiki, and our municipal services for preparing the relevant studies.”

“Supply and installation of a prefabricated above-ground swimming pool in the Municipality of Papagou-Cholargos,” with a total budget of 534,000 euros

A complete, self-supporting, prefabricated above-ground swimming pool system will be installed at the Vasileios Xydis Papagou Sports Centre, measuring at least 20 by 12.50 by 1.35 metres, with five swimming lanes. The supply includes prefabricated changing rooms for participants and people with disabilities, a medical room, a perimeter walkway, full electromechanical filtration, recirculation, heating and disinfection equipment, and an energy-efficient water heating system using heat pumps.

Mayor of Papagou-Cholargos Ilias Apostolopoulos said: “Sport is an integral part of daily life in the Municipality of Papagou-Cholargos. Our town has a particularly active sporting community, with numerous sports clubs and thousands of residents of all ages exercising daily at our sports facilities. In this context, the creation of a new swimming pool at the Vasileios Xydis Papagou Sports Centre is an important step in strengthening our municipality’s sports infrastructure. I want to warmly thank Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias for his steady support and excellent cooperation. With the Attica Region’s contribution, we are turning an important project for our town into reality.”

“Supply and installation of synthetic turf at the Alkyon pitch in the Municipality of Petroupoli,” with a total budget of 419,368 euros

The project involves removing the existing turf and fully installing new turf covering 7,600 square metres at the 11-a-side Alkyon football pitch.

Mayor of Petroupoli Vangelis Simou said: “I am particularly pleased that the reconstruction of the turf at the Alkyon 11-a-side football pitch has today been included in the Attica Region’s Regional Development Programme. This project is especially important because it concerns our children’s access to sport in modern, safe facilities. Young people and their needs are a priority for us, and accordingly, similar projects will be carried out at other sports facilities in future, along with the creation of new ones. I want to thank the Attica Region for responding to our request and for funding the reconstruction of the turf at the Alkyon pitch.”

“Upgrade of existing sports facilities in the Municipality of Saronikos,” with a total budget of 682,000 euros

The interventions concern the Vasilis Trochidis Anavyssos Football Pitch and the Palaia Fokaia Football Pitch. Among other works, these include earthworks and sub-base improvements, building works and painting, the creation of entrances with cobblestones, the construction and upgrade of parking areas, the installation of safety netting, the creation of a jumping pit and a tartan runway, the construction of a new 100-seat stand, upgrades to basketball and tennis courts, the installation of modern LED lighting, outdoor gym equipment, and new sports equipment.

Mayor of Saronikos Dimitris Papachristou said: “Anyone who has stood on a pitch full of children knows we are not simply talking about a playing field. We are talking about the friendships, the teams and the dreams that grow within it. That is why it matters so much that the pitches of Saronikos Anavyssos and Proteas Palaia Fokaia are being substantially transformed. I want to particularly thank Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias, who stands firmly by Saronikos and shows in practice that when local government cooperates with clear goals, the needs of local communities are turned into projects. With the Region’s funding, we will deliver two pitches worthy of their clubs’ history and, above all, of the people who fill them with life every day and keep sport alive in every neighbourhood.”

“Upgrade of sports facilities in the Municipality of Chaidari,” with a total budget of 1,900,000 euros

The project includes extensive maintenance and energy upgrade works at the Municipal Swimming Pool and the football pitch of the municipality’s First Sports Centre, as well as covering a sports area in the courtyard of a school complex with an air-supported dome (bubble).

Mayor of Chaidari Michalis Selekos said: “Our municipality, with funding from the Attica Region, is proceeding with the improvement and upgrade of the town’s sports facilities. Specifically, these are the projects:

1. The energy and general upgrade of the Chaidari Municipal Swimming Pool.
2. The installation of an air-supported dome (bubble) to cover a sports area at a school complex in Chaidari.
3. The maintenance and upgrade of the football pitch at the municipality’s First Sports Centre.

These projects have been included in the Attica Region’s Regional Development Programme under the title “Strengthening and Upgrading Sport,” with a total budget of 1,900,000 euros.

These represent important interventions that have long been requested, and now, in cooperation with the Attica Region, we are finally seeing them move towards implementation.”
