New details have emerged about the murder of the 25-year-old woman in Igoumenitsa last night, after her 27-year-old former partner has confessed that an argument over money led to him killing her in cold blood.

“She owed me €2,000,” he reportedly claimed. He told officers that he then struck her in the neck with a penknife, fatally wounding her.

The 25-year-old was found a short time later, bloodied and unconscious, in a gazebo on a cycle path. The National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB) crew who arrived at the scene confirmed her death.

According to information, the 27-year-old and the 25-year-old had previously been in a relationship but split up around a month ago. Authorities are now also examining the history of their relationship as part of the investigation into what led up to the killing.

The initial lie to police and the confession

The man initially claimed, falsely, that he and the victim had been attacked on the cycle path by four people with their faces covered, who then fled.

Later, however, he confessed that he had stabbed her with a penknife after their quarrel, and that he had thrown the knife away as he fled the scene. Police officers managed to locate him a short time later.

He was found by officers with chest wounds which, according to reports, he had inflicted on himself, shortly after phoning the Operations Centre of the Thesprotia Police Directorate.

He was taken first by EKAB ambulance to the Emergency Department in Igoumenitsa for first aid, and then to Filiates General Hospital, where he is being treated and is out of danger.

According to reports, he will remain in hospital today, as one of the wounds he inflicted on himself is deeper.

The call to the authorities was made at 21:44, five minutes after police were first informed about the 25-year-old. At that point, the 27-year-old was unable to specify exactly where he was.
