The discussion and vote on the judicial requests to lift the parliamentary immunity of Zoe Konstantopoulou, Lefteris Avgenakis and Makarios Lazaridis will take place in the Plenary of Parliament at noon.

It is recalled that two criminal complaints have been filed against the President of Course of Freedom. The first was filed by a police officer from the Larissa Transfer Department, who alleged that Ms. Konstantopoulou filmed him and posted the footage on social media without his consent during the trial over the Tempi tragedy.

The second case concerns a complaint filed by the president of the Union of Judges and Prosecutors, Christoforos Sevastidis, accusing her of repeated public and online defamation. For the two judicial requests, the members of the Ethics Committee recommended by majority that her immunity be lifted.

The case against Mr. Avgenakis was initiated following a complaint filed by Stefanos Kasselakis, president of the Democrats party, over a false asset declaration, while Mr. Lazaridis was sued by a political candidate from Sorras’ party over the case concerning academic degrees.

The ND majority on the Ethics Committee ruled that the two cases were politically motivated, given that the complainants are political figures, and recommended voting against the relevant requests to lift their immunity.

Despite the recommendation of the competent committee, however, ND MPs will vote according to their conscience in the relevant ballot, a position that the leadership of the “blue” parliamentary group also appears to support.

The development appears to be directly linked to the strong dissatisfaction and irritation expressed within the government majority over the Ethics Committee’s initial recommendation.

According to information, many ND MPs believed that the established position in favor of lifting immunity should also be adopted in these cases, as had happened in the cases involving their colleagues in connection with OPEKEPE, regardless of whether any criminal offense had been established.
