Elon Musk has spent approximately $366 million so far on the 2026 midterm elections, up from $276 million in July, in an effort to help Republicans retain control of Congress.
Despite this, Democrats’ chances of taking control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate have improved.
The donations by Musk, reported by The New York Times, could make the world’s richest man the largest individual political donor in this year’s election contests, according to campaign finance records.
Musk has a great deal at stake, as Democrats in the House of Representatives are calling for investigations into government contracts awarded to SpaceX, the space company he leads as CEO, as well as his work as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump. However, Musk is a supporter of the Republican anti-woke policies, making his commitment to a Republican victory an ideological fight for him as well.
Musk’s political spending, confirmed by a spokesperson for his political action committee, America PAC, is as follows:
– Musk has spent $366 million so far in this election cycle, which began on January 1, 2025.
– Of that amount, Musk has donated at least $276 million to Republican organisations and his own super PAC since July. Of this sum, $158 million went to the Senate Leadership Fund, which was established to help elect Republicans to the Senate and is associated with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota.
– A total of $20 million went to the Congressional Leadership Fund, the political action committee established to support House Republicans. It is associated with House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana.
– A total of $76 million went to Musk’s own political action committee, America PAC.
– Another $10 million went to the Lone Star Liberty PAC, which supports the candidacy of Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton for the US Senate. Recent polls show Paxton locked in a close race with Democrat James Talarico.
– A further $10 million went to the Republican Governors Association, while $2 million went to the Republican Attorneys General Association.
America PAC is providing assistance to Republican candidates in seven states where races are closely contested, as well as in more than 30 House races.
According to The New York Times report, which was confirmed by an America PAC spokesperson, Elon Musk has also donated to groups that do not disclose their donors.
