The severe weather system affecting Greece remains in full force, with heavy rainfall on Tuesday (13 October) causing flooding, traffic disruption and damage, particularly in Attica and Skiathos. On Wednesday, the Sporades islands and Evia are expected to be the worst-hit areas.

Shortly after 7am, an emergency alert was sent via 112, Greece’s emergency notification service, warning residents in Evia, specifically in the area of Politika, to take care when travelling.

Meanwhile, the Fire Service has received 20 calls in Evia and has carried out 19 tree-cutting operations.

At the same time, according to reports by evima.gr, a secondary bridge collapsed in the Kyparissi area, at a location known as Pethamenos, in the Municipality of Mantoudi–Limni–Agia Anna, as a result of the severe weather.

In Skiathos, a car was swept away by rushing floodwaters, while roads and shops were inundated. Power cuts have affected almost half of Skiathos and half of Skopelos, and a 112 alert was issued urging people to limit their movements.

According to the island’s mayor, the most intense conditions occurred between midnight and 2am. Flooding was reported on several main roads, including Papadiamanti Street, where two parked cars were swept away and part of the paved road was torn up.

In Attica, heavy rain led to traffic restrictions and flooded roads, with 85mm of rain recorded in Perama by Tuesday evening. According to the Fire Service’s Operations Centre, 38 calls were received in Attica, with nine water-pumping operations and 15 tree-cutting operations carried out so far.

The severe weather is continuing on Wednesday, 14 October, with the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) maintaining a red alert for Evia and forecasting severe thunderstorms in several areas, as well as winds locally reaching force 10 on the Beaufort scale in the Aegean. Meanwhile, schools remain closed in several parts of the country, and the state emergency services are on heightened alert.

Severe flooding in Skiathos as two cars are swept away

Skiathos is among the areas hardest hit by the severe weather, with heavy rainfall flooding the central pedestrian street and neighbouring roads in the settlement. Water entered shops, while damage was also reported to homes.

According to the island’s mayor, Theodoros Tzoumas, two parked cars were swept away by floodwaters. Fire Service, police and municipal teams were mobilised to deal with the problems. Significant disruption was also reported in Agia Paraskevi and Platanias.

Conditions were particularly difficult on the island’s ring road, where traffic near the Sklavenitis supermarket was moving with difficulty. Near the Kassandra Hotel, vehicles were almost unable to pass. Meanwhile, reports from the island indicated that power cuts had affected around half of Skiathos.

At 12.32am on Wednesday, Civil Protection sent an urgent alert via 112, urging residents and visitors to avoid unnecessary travel.

“Severe weather conditions on the island of Skiathos. Restrict your movements to those that are absolutely necessary. Follow the instructions of the authorities,” the warning message said.

The mayor intends to request that the island be declared a state of emergency because of the scale of the damage and disruption.

Local authorities are urging residents to limit their movements until further notice and not to attempt to cross flooded roads, streams or torrents.

Flooded roads and traffic restrictions in Attica

Heavy rainfall also caused significant problems in Attica, with the storm affecting central Athens, Piraeus, Perama, Megara and areas of western and eastern Attica.

Traffic police introduced diversions because of water accumulating on the road network. Restrictions were imposed on Imerou Pevkou Street, near Agiou Ioannou Street in Pikermi, and on the old Athens–Corinth national road between kilometre markers 39.5 and 39.7, on the Athens-bound carriageway in the Megara area. At the latter location, traffic was diverted onto the opposite carriageway.

Problems were also reported on Omiridou Skylitsis Street in Piraeus, from the junction with Tzavella Street towards Poseidonos Avenue.

Rain continued to fall heavily in central Athens throughout Tuesday, making conditions difficult for both pedestrians and drivers. Particularly high rainfall totals were recorded in Perama, Mandra and Salamina, where flooded roads were reported.

Ferry sailings suspended at Piraeus and Lavrio as Greece braces for severe weather

Red weather alert remains in place for Evia, with winds reaching force 10 – Schools closed across several islands as heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast

Ferry sailings suspended at Piraeus and Lavrio

A sailing ban remains in force at the ports of Piraeus and Lavrio until 3pm, as strong winds sweep across several sea areas in Greece. According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), winds in parts of the Aegean are reaching force 9 and, temporarily, force 10 on the Beaufort scale.

According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the passenger and vehicle ferry Blue Star Delos departed Piraeus as scheduled at 7.20am, operating its planned route to Paros, Naxos, Thira and Ios.

Only some services to the Argosaronic Gulf are operating, using conventional passenger and vehicle ferries, while hydrofoil services have been suspended.

By contrast, morning sailings from the port of Rafina are expected to operate as normal.

Services on the Agia Marina–Nea Styra and Arkitsa–Aidipsos ferry routes have also been suspended due to adverse weather conditions.

Passengers planning to travel today are advised to contact their local port authorities and travel agencies before departure to check for any changes, delays or amendments to scheduled services.

Where the severe weather will hit today – EMY warnings

Wednesday (14 October) is expected to bring another difficult day, with heavy rain and thunderstorms across much of the country, particularly in coastal and maritime areas. The storms may be accompanied by local hail, while the heaviest rainfall is expected in Evia, the Sporades and possibly northern Attica.

According to the updated Emergency Weather Bulletin issued by the EMY, which contains no substantial changes from the original forecast, the areas expected to be worst affected are:

  • Evia: Red alert, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected until late afternoon.
  • Eastern Central Greece and Attica: Orange alert for severe weather until the morning.
  • Sporades and Magnesia: Orange alert, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected until the afternoon.
  • Halkidiki: Severe weather expected until the morning.
  • Northeastern Peloponnese and the Cyclades: Brief periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms during the early hours of the day.
  • Dodecanese: Heavy rain and thunderstorms expected until the afternoon.
  • Crete: Severe weather, particularly in Chania and Rethymno, expected until late at night.

An orange alert is in force for all the above areas except Evia, which remains under a red alert. The emergency bulletin is expected to be updated again within 12 hours of its previous issuance.

In areas where the weather is expected to be most severe, authorities are urging people to take particular care when travelling, especially near streams, torrents and places where large volumes of water may accumulate.

Winds reaching force 10, with gusts exceeding 100 km/h

In addition to the heavy rain, a key feature of Wednesday’s severe weather will be the very strong winds across the Aegean.

According to the HNMS, northeasterly winds of force 8 to 9, temporarily reaching force 10 in some areas, will initially affect the northern Aegean before spreading to the central Aegean. The conditions are expected to persist until late at night.

The weather website meteo.gr warns that wind gusts across the Aegean and eastern mainland Greece could reach 90–100 km/h, with locally higher speeds possible.

Elsewhere in the Aegean and across eastern mainland Greece, northerly winds of force 6 to 7, locally reaching force 8, are expected, easing slightly from the afternoon. In the Ionian Sea, northerly to northwesterly winds will reach force 6 to 7 before weakening significantly after midday and shifting to easterly to northeasterly winds.

Schools closed in Evia, the Sporades, the Cyclades and the Dodecanese

Municipalities and regional authorities have suspended in-person school lessons because of the dangerous weather conditions and potential disruption to travel for pupils and teachers.

In Evia, all schools in the Municipality of Mantoudi–Limni–Agia Anna will remain closed today following a decision by Mayor Giorgos Tsapourniotis. According to forecasts cited by the municipal authority, rainfall in the eastern parts of the municipality could exceed 150 millimetres. Lessons will take place remotely.

Similar decisions have been taken in the municipalities of Dirfys–Messapia and Kymi–Aliveri. In Dirfys–Messapia, kindergartens, primary schools, lower and upper secondary schools, the municipal childcare and infant care centre, and the Centre for Creative Activities for People with Disabilities (KDAP-AMEA) will suspend operations. In Kymi–Aliveri, the measure also covers all levels of education, as well as childcare and infant care centres.

In Skiathos, primary and secondary schools will remain closed, along with the municipal infant care centre. Similarly, all schools in Skopelos will close, including the special education school and the municipal nursery.

In the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, all schools, childcare centres, preschool facilities and special education schools will suspend operations following a decision by South Aegean Regional Governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos. The measure applies across the entire South Aegean Region and was taken as a precaution to protect pupils and teachers.

Where possible, lessons will be delivered remotely, in accordance with instructions from the relevant education authorities.

No general school closures have been announced for Attica today, although local decisions remain possible depending on how the weather develops. Parents are advised to monitor announcements from their municipalities and schools before taking their children to school.
